Wine Publication #3

           Alright all my wine lovers from another mother, hope the last wine publication taught you a few things but let’s be honest, who really likes white wine anyway!….I mean, im sure it gives you a great buzz and tastes great in a muscle scampi but nothing compares to the red vino’s of the world. Of course everyone is entitled to their own opinion, im just saying there wrong!

So here we go:

Red Wines:

*Red wines are typically more popular and more frequently sold by the bottle in most restaurants. Knowing my background I typically like to lean toward more Italian varietals myself but there are many great red wines from other regions as well.

Pinot Noir: The Pinot noir is a french varietal that derives its name from the cluster of grapes from which the wine is made (The french word Pinot “pine” and Noir “black). The grapes are typically tightly clustered and dark purple forming a pine-cone shape. Pinot’s are considered to be a more medium to full-bodied wine with hints of black and red cherry in the forefront and  nut and strawberry in its finish. To the smell however you get distinct cranberry, violets and even tomato leaf. The Pinot Noir is typically a grape varietal from the Burgundy region of France and in many other cooler regions.

Merlot: The Merlot like the Pinot is typically a medium bodied red wine. You are more accustomed to see Merlot varietals in the Bordeaux region of france but it has increased in popularity in places such as California, South America and Italy. Merlot tends to ripen quicker than other varietal which makes it a prime grape to blend with other red varietals. Its early ripening typically brings about a softer and fruitier taste then perhaps a Cabernet Sauvignon. Merlot’s usually display hints of plum, blackcherry and chocolate, with hints of tea leaf and mint tones.

Cabernet Sauvignon:  The Cabernet is probably one of the most commonly order wines in the United States (that’s because they fucking kick ass). “Cab’s” are a relatively new varietal because it is traditionally a blend of the Cab Franc and Sauvignon Blanc grapes. Cab’s traditionally range from medium to fullness in body and range in flavors due to the wine makers choice of aging. The longer the aging process the longer the oak has to contribute to the body of the wine, typically making it more expensive. Cab Sav’s mainly shows hints of black currant, tobacco, green bell pepper and black plum.

Zinfandel: Zinfandel grapes are a varietal that are typically full in body and produce robust red wines. The “red zin” traditionally features hints of blueberry, plum and peppercorn with an undertone of cranberry and blackberry.

*If you drink white Zinfandel you suck

Italian Reds:

*Here are some very traditional Italian red varietals that hopefully wont scare you on a menu the next time you can’t pronounce them!

Sangiovese: Pronounced (san-joe-VAY-zee) is an italian grape varietal that is traditionally most famous for its help in blending to make Chianti’s (a hearty Tuscan wine). The Sangiovese varietal is typically high in acidity with flavors of sour red cherry and undertones of fennel and licorice.

Montepulciano: Pronounced (mon-tuh-pul-CHEE-an-no) is a type of grape and a type of wine which derives from the Abruzzo region in central Italy. Montepulciano d’ Abruzzo is one of my favorite wines for it is medium in body and fruity in its nature with a soft complexity.

*As you can tell I am highly bias toward red wine and although I make fun, everyone has their own preferences which is a great thing and what makes us all unique. A few words of wisdom before I depart for the night….If its good enough for Jesus….well its good enough for jesus, so that should be enough!
